Just think…your book has the ability to make an impact on the world. As an indie publisher, choosing a cause to align with your book is a powerful decision, and it’s one you can begin thinking about early in your writing process.
Whether your mission is to feed the hungry, save the rainforest, or raise awareness about human trafficking, your book can help drive visibility, connection, and funding for the cause that matters to you.
A few things to consider…
1. Choose a cause that reflects your message. If your book is a memoir about surviving intimate partner abuse, for example, you might align with an organization that supports shelters or helps survivors heal. Let the heart of your story guide you toward a mission that feels authentic.
2. Decide how you want to show your support. You don’t have to donate a percentage of profits (though that’s one option). You might include a list of vetted nonprofits in your Acknowledgments, dedicate your Business Page to raising awareness, or provide a Resources section in the back of the book. Even a few heartfelt sentences can create a ripple effect.
3. Consider partnerships.Think about offering discounted copies of your book to organizations or speaking at their events. I recommend partnering with small to mid-size nonprofits, because they often welcome support and don’t already have large marketing teams or budgets.
Start with a conversation:
“I’m publishing a book that connects with your mission. How can I help?”
4. Leverage the flexibility of indie publishing. One of the best parts of independent publishing is that you stay in control. If an organization you support dissolves or you want to change your focus, you can revise the book’s interior and upload a new version anytime.
5. Share your cause early and often.Mention your mission in your book description (on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc.) so potential readers see it before they even buy the book. This can strengthen your connection with values-driven readers from the start.
Final Thoughts
When your book supports a cause, your story becomes a part of a greater movement. Don’t be afraid to write with purpose and lead with heart. Your book has the power to create real change.
